چکیده

Antigenic components of penicillins — In order to understand the possible cross reactivity among penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems and monobactams, it is helpful to review the potential allergens in penicillins. Patients with IgE-mediated allergy to penicillins may be reactive to the beta-lactam ring structure that is common to all penicillins, or to the R-group side chains that distinguish different penicillins from one another. In the United States, most penicillin allergic patients are sensitive to the beta-lactam core. In contrast, in southern Europe where amoxicillin constitutes 90 percent of antibiotic use in some countries, up to one third of patients are said to react to the R group side chain. (See "Allergy to penicillins".)

Cross-reactivity of beta-lactam antibiotics.

BUMC PROCEEDINGS 2001;14:106–107 D uring a drug history, the most common drug allergies cited are those experienced after the administration of a penicillin, with a reported allergy incidence of 1% to 10% in patients who receive drugs in this class (1). Penicillins, as well as other beta-lactam antibiotics such as cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams, contain a beta-lactam ring (2). The...

746Tolerability of Cephalosporins and Carbapenems in Patients with Reported Penicillin Allergies in a Real World Setting

Background. Practitioners have historically avoided cephalosporins and carbapenems in penicillin allergic patients. Despite recent literature suggesting a lower crosssensitivity than originally reported; practitioners continue to avoid cephalosporins and carbapenems in this patient population. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the tolerability of cephalosporins and carbapenems in patient...

Investigation of β-lactam antibacterial drugs, β-lactamases, and penicillin-binding proteins with fluorescence polarization and anisotropy: a review.

This review covers the uses of fluorescence polarization and anisotropy for the investigation of bacterial penicillin binding proteins (PBPs), which are the targets of β-lactam antibacterial drugs (penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams), and of the β-lactamase enzymes that destroy these drugs and help to render bacterial pathogens resistant to them. Fluorescence polarization...
